Census Forms Arriving Mid-March – Be Counted!
The U.S. Census Bureau is mailing census forms to all residents in mid-March. Residents will have until Mid-April to complete and return the form. Completing the form is easy, safe and important!
Easy - The 2010 Census has only 10 Questions.  Information about everyone who lives at a residence should be included on the completed Census form.
Safe - Per Title 13 of the United States Code, the U.S. Census Bureau is not allowed to share an individual's response with anyone, including other federal agencies or law enforcement entities.
Important - Census data determines boundaries for state and local legislative and congressional districts.  Also, Census data determines how $400 billion in federal funding (for schools, roads, senior centers and libraries - to name a few examples) is allocated to communities.  Every person is worth an average of $1000 to their community in federal funding if they are counted in the Census.

Temporary 1¢ Tax Increase Factual Information
Temporary 1¢ Tax Increase Factual Information
Governor Jan Brewer has proposed a temporary sales tax increase to help close current budget shortfalls. This measure will be on the May 18 special election ballot. The House approved a Senate-passed resolution to refer the one-cent, three-year sales tax increase to voters. The one cent sales tax increase measure would increase the current rate of 5.6 percent to 6.6 percent for three years and raise an estimated $2.9 billion to help close Arizona's budget deficit.

Cocopah Cares
Cocopah Middle School, Treasures4Teachers, Intel, and Soles4Souls are donating over 3,000 pair of shoes to help the people in Haiti

The Intel Corporation donated over 3,000 pair of rubber soled ‘clean room’ shoes to Treasures4Teachers. Treasures4Teachers in Tempe, Arizona is a local non-profit organization that collects donations of new and used materials from businesses and recycles the donated items to provide teachers with low cost classroom materials.

Louise Bunker (Technology) and Ann Achtziger (Service Learning) both teachers at Cocopah Middle School teamed up with seventh grade student Cole St. John in collecting shoes for Soles4Souls. St. John recently collected 628 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls.  Together they contacted Soles4Souls to see if the ‘clean room’ shoes qualified for their program and if they could be used to help the people of Haiti. The students and staff at Cocopah Middle School added a personal touch to over 1,000 pairs of the shoes by decorating them with permanent markers.  Treasures4Teachers and Smart Practice also donated over 1,000 post cards so the Cocopah students and staff could write messages of hope to the people receiving the shoes. The shoes will be delivered to the people of Haiti later this month.

The final count is in from Cocopah’s "Hope for Haiti" spare change project resulting in raising $10,626!   Students were educated by the Service Learning class on the devastation in Haiti and then urged to bring in any spare change that they could find or earn to their first period class on January 29th.   The entire Cocopah community showed their compassion, empathy and commitment to make a difference.

Another incentive for the students was that several teachers and our administrators agreed to do a Buffalo Wild Wings Challenge if a certain amount was raised.  In addition, a teacher offered to let the kids shave his head.  The challenge took place on February 1st.  The event was broadcast throughout the school and was enjoyed by all.

Homework Club
Students who are looking for a quiet place to do their homework or who are looking for additional help on their assignments may come to Homework Club Tuesdays in room A 11 before school from 8:00 - 8:45 or after school from 3:45 - 4:30.

Spelling Bee Winner
On December 9, 2009, Cocopah Middle School held its school-wide Spelling Bee. Congratulations to Justin Wang, an eighth grader, for winning the competition. This group of class spelling bee winners was the strongest group of contestants in recent history.    Justin went eighteen rounds before winning with the correct spelling of pheasant . The runner-up was also an eighth grader, Jordyn Ochser. Justin and Jordyn went head-to-head for four rounds before Justin prevailed. It was a very exciting finish.  We wish to thank all thirty-one participants for the effort and maturity displayed during the contest.  Justin will now compete at the district level in January.  We wish him the best of luck. Go Mustangs!

Congratulations to Justin who won the district spelling bee and moves on to the next round.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up Times
Please be aware that the appropriate time to drop off students in the morning is 8:20, unless they have a previously arranged meeting or activity such as a study session with a teacher or athletic practice.  The school does not provide any supervision for students who arrive earlier.  Dismissal is at 3:30 and students are expected to be picked up no later than 4:00, unless they are staying for a prearranged activity.  This is a matter of safety for all students and parent cooperation with this policy is greatly appreciated.

Tax Credit Donation Now Online
Did you know state law (A.R.S 43-1089.01) allows you to a tax credit when you pay up to $200.00 for single filers/$400.00 married filers to a public school for extracurricular activities that require an enrolled student to pay a fee?  This means taxpayers may help COCOPAH-not the state treasury-and reduce their state tax bill at the same time.  Dollar for dollar-this costs you nothing!

As we head into the tax credit season we want to let you know there is a new on line payment program this year.  Payments can be made on line by going to the SUSD web site or the following URL https://touchbase.susd.org/touchbase/You can log in by entering your students’ ID number for the log in and last name for the password or you can enter as a guest.  To make a donation click on School Shop and select the program to make your donation. There are product categories for tax credits at each site so you can click on the product category to see a list of tax credit programs specific to Cocopah or you can scroll through the tax credit programs at all sites.  Once you have found the program to donate to you add that product to cart and enter in the amount you wish to donate.  We have also added comment fields so community members can specify donations to specific students if paying for a specific trip or activity
Also, please note that we DO NOT charge a fee for tax credit donations/payments made on line.
This is a great way for parents and community members to make their tax credit donations
